Health Tips for July 16

Health Tip: Take Appendicitis Symptoms Seriously

While the appendix doesn't appear to have a real job in the body, it quickly becomes a concern when inflammation of the organ -- known as appendicitis -- sets in.

The Cleveland Clinic mentions these warning signs of appendicitis:

  • Vomiting and nausea.
  • Pain in the lower-right area of the abdomen that becomes worse when touched.
  • Soreness just above the belly button that may extend to the lower-right area of the belly.
  • Aforementioned pain that worsens when coughing, sneezing, moving around or taking a deep breath.
  • Running a mild fever.
  • Having diarrhea, constipation or being unable to pass gas.
  • Loss of appetite.
  • Abdominal swelling.

Health Tip: Insufficient Sleep Can Be Dangerous

A good night's sleep does much more than help you stay awake through a long day. It actually helps protect your health.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lists these problems that can arise as a result of insufficient sleep:

  • Increased risk of chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
  • Greater likelihood of becoming obese or overweight.
  • Increased risk of developing depression.
  • Added risk of getting into a motor vehicle accident because of "drowsy driving."
