Health Tips for June 14

Health Tip: What to Eat When Going Gluten-Free?

When a health condition such as Celiac disease requires a gluten-free diet, you may not be aware of what is okay to eat.

The U.S. National Library of Medicine mentions these staples of a gluten-free diet:

  • Cereals that don't include barley malt or wheat.
  • Vegetables and fruits.
  • Fresh fish, poultry and meat that don't include breading or typical gravies.
  • Dairy products and milk.
  • Beans, corn, rice and potatoes.

Health Tip: Signs You're Getting Too Much Iron

While iron deficiency is a big concern, absorbing too much iron -- a condition known as hemochromatosis -- can also pose problems.

The womenshealth.gov website lists these warning signs of hemocromatosis, one of the most common genetic conditions in the United States:

  • Feeling weak and fatigued.
  • Losing weight.
  • Arthritis, pain in the joints and pain in the abdominal area.
  • A fluttering sensation in the chest and other heart problems.
  • Missing periods or early onset of menopause.
  • Diminished sex drive and impotence.
