Health Tips for February 10

Health Tip: What May Be Behind Hives

Hives are itchy, raised, light pink or red patches that erupt on the skin as a result of an allergic reaction.

The American Academy of Dermatology offers this list of possible causes:

  • A reaction to a food; common examples include chocolate, nuts, eggs, milk, berries, shellfish or tomatoes.
  • An insect bite.
  • A reaction to a prescription or over-the-counter medication, commonly antibiotics, pain-relievers, vitamins or herbs, arthritis drugs or antacids.
  • A bacterial, viral or fungal infection.
  • Exposure to the sun or extreme temperature, water or pressure on the skin.
  • Scratching the skin.

Health Tip: Coping With Hives

Hives are the result of an allergic reaction. They typically go away without treatment, but can be an itchy nuisance.

The University of Maryland Medical Center suggests how to deal with hives:

  • Don't let bath or shower water get too hot.
  • Don't wear tightly-fitting clothing, which can irritate the skin.
  • Take an antihistamine to help reduce hives and their symptoms.
  • Milder cases of hives may not need any treatment.
  • Severe hives may need emergency treatment with epinephrine.
